Questions we get
Short answers to the things people ask before the first email.
Where are you?
Kalevala.dev is a Finnish-rooted software company working remotely with clients in Finland and abroad. Our working hours cover most of the day across Europe and Asia. We work in English and Finnish.
Why "Kalevala"?
The Kalevala is the Finnish national epic. The name says something about the kind of work we want to do: things made to last, with care, by people who know the craft.
How big are you?
A focused core team, extended with trusted engineers we have worked with before when a project needs more hands, always under our responsibility. Small enough that the people you talk to are the people accountable for the work.
Do you do design?
We do interface design as part of building: layouts, flows, states, a restrained visual system that will not date. We do not do brand identity or marketing campaigns. For those we work with your agency or recommend one.
Can you work with our existing developers?
Yes, and we like it. We join your repositories and processes, we leave the code in a state they can own, and we are happy to be the ones who leave.
Can you sign an NDA first?
Yes. Send yours or ask for ours.
Do you use AI to write code?
Yes, as a tool, with a human reading and responsible for every line. We also build AI systems for clients, so we know both what it is good at and where it quietly fails. Nothing we deliver has been shipped unreviewed.
What if we are not sure what we need?
Send what you have. The first reply is us turning it into something concrete you can react to. If the honest answer is that you do not need custom software, we will say so and point you at what you do need.
How do we start?
Email toimeksianto@kalevala.dev with the brief. The contact page has a template if you want one.
